What’s the Difference Between Sparkling Water and Still Water?
Still water and sparkling water are both just water — with one key difference. Sparkling water contains dissolved carbon dioxide gas, which creates the characteristic bubbles and the light, slightly acidic sensation on the palate. Beyond that single distinction, the two are more similar than the popular mythology around sparkling water would suggest. A lot of the concern about sparkling water — that it's bad for teeth, that it's less hydrating, that it's somehow less healthy — turns out to be based on research that applies to carbonated soft drinks, not plain sparkling water. The Different Types of Sparkling Water
Not all sparkling water is the same. The term covers several distinct products that are worth understanding before you reach for a bottle:
- Carbonated water or soda water: plain water with CO₂ added artificially. Nothing else in it
- Sparkling mineral water: naturally occurring water from a specific underground source, containing dissolved minerals and sometimes natural carbonation from the source itself
- Club soda: carbonated water with added minerals — typically sodium bicarbonate, sodium citrate or potassium bicarbonate — giving it a slightly different taste to plain soda water
- Tonic water: a separate category entirely, containing quinine and usually added sugar. This is a flavoured drink rather than plain water and should not be confused with soda water or sparkling mineral water
The health and hydration properties people associate with sparkling water generally apply to plain carbonated water and sparkling mineral water. Tonic water and flavoured sparkling drinks have very different compositions — including added sugars, citric acid or other compounds — and should be assessed separately rather than grouped with plain sparkling water.
What the CO₂ Actually Does
When carbon dioxide dissolves in water under pressure, it forms carbonic acid — a weak acid that gives sparkling water its mild acidity and the tingle you feel when you drink it. Most plain sparkling waters have a pH of around 4 to 5, compared to still water which typically sits closer to 7 (neutral).
This mild acidity is the source of most questions about whether sparkling water is safe to drink regularly. The short answer is that the carbonic acid in plain sparkling water is considerably weaker than the acids found in fruit juice, coffee, wine or soft drinks, and at normal consumption levels it does not present a meaningful health concern for otherwise healthy adults. The acidity also dissipates quickly once the glass is open and the CO₂ begins to escape, which is why flat sparkling water loses most of its distinctive character.
Does Sparkling Water Harm Your Teeth?
The enamel erosion question is the most persistent concern about sparkling water. Research looking specifically at plain carbonated water has found it to be only marginally more erosive than still water — and far less erosive than orange juice, soft drinks or sports drinks. For people who drink plain sparkling water in normal amounts as part of a regular diet, the risk to dental enamel is considered low.
The concern is much more relevant for flavoured sparkling waters and drinks with added citric acid, which are significantly more acidic than plain carbonated water. Some popular flavoured sparkling waters are more acidic than orange juice — which is a meaningful difference from plain sparkling water. If you're drinking sparkling water for hydration, plain varieties are the better choice for your teeth and are nutritionally equivalent to still water.
Does Sparkling Water Hydrate You as Well as Still Water?
Yes. Sparkling water hydrates the body just as effectively as still water. The evidence on this is fairly clear, and the idea that sparkling water is somehow less hydrating appears to stem from confusion with carbonated soft drinks, which contain caffeine, high sodium or other compounds with mild diuretic or fluid-displacing effects. Plain carbonated water contains none of these.

- Does the carbonation make you absorb water more slowly? No — the CO₂ does not affect how water is absorbed in the digestive tract

- Is sparkling water a good substitute for still water? Yes, for hydration purposes. If you find plain still water unappealing and are more likely to drink enough fluid when you have a sparkling option, that’s a net positive
Why Sparkling Water Tastes Different
Taste perception is subjective, but there are objective reasons why sparkling water tastes different to still water. The mild acidity activates different taste receptors to those stimulated by neutral pH still water, and the carbonation adds a physical sensation — the prickle and effervescence — that many people experience as crispness or refreshment. This is one of the reasons sparkling water is often described as more satisfying to drink than still water, even at the same temperature.
The mineral content of the source water also affects taste significantly. Different brands of sparkling mineral water taste distinctly different from each other and from plain carbonated tap water. Higher mineral content generally produces a more complex, slightly salty or alkaline flavour, while low-mineral sparkling water tastes closer to plain carbonated water. This is worth knowing if you’ve tried one brand and found it unappealing — the flavour profile across brands varies considerably.
