Dehydration is silent, and often hard to notice until it’s upon you. When you think about it like that, the main cause of dehydration is forgetfulness! So why not place water front and centre, where you can see it? That’s our top solution: get a cold water cooler and place it in clear view. If you’ve got cold water on offer in the middle of your living room or office, staying hydrated in hot weather will become second nature to you.
Eating lots of fruit and veg helps you stay hydrated in hot weather: here’s how
Our water intake is a lot more variable than we think. It may seem as though all our water comes from the tap, but there’s quite a bit of water in our diet that we don’t see. Fruit and vegetables are the perfect example. Fruit and veg contain a lot of water, which can help you stay hydrated in hot weather. If you look at fruits like watermelon and cucumber, you can probably see where we’re going with this… Add a fruit salad into your day, or throw some cold cucumber over a salad and you’ve got a delicious, refreshing, and hydrating meal!
Tea and coffee may contain water, but they don’t help you stay hydrated in hot weather
To a lot of people, hot weather is no barrier to a morning cup of tea or coffee. And because of the high water content, it’s easy to think that it’ll hydrate you. But that’s not quite the case. The reason for that is simple: caffeine. Caffeine is what’s known as a diuretic. That means it causes fluids to be expelled from your body as urine at a higher than average rate. Consequently, the water within a cup of coffee is likely to pass through your system without stopping where it’s really needed. If you’re intent on staying hydrated in hot weather, coffee and tea certainly aren’t the best ways to do so.

Kids are rarely tempted by a glass of water. Even in the heat of a summer’s day, it can be hard to convince your children to stock up on fluids. Luckily, there are a few cheats on offer! Kids love anything colourful and sweet. But that doesn’t mean soft drinks should take the place of water. Instead, try making your own fruit juice and heavily diluting it with water. This will often be enough to convince your kid to stay hydrated. If not, you can always try a heavily diluted sugar free cordial.

Finally, let’s talk alcohol. For a lot of adults, alcohol has added appeal in summer. It’s cold, refreshing, and pretty pervasive. But it does little to hydrate you. In fact, it can leave you more dehydrated than when you started. Of course, that doesn’t mean you need to abstain altogether. But as a bare minimum, you should have at least one full glass of water to every alcoholic beverage you consume – on top of your daily 2.5L that is!
