Fact or myth: everyone needs to be drinking at least eight cups of water a day
This one gets thrown around pretty often, and people are starting to question its legitimacy. So is this a fact or a myth? Well, in technical terms it’s a myth; you don’t need to drink eight glasses of water a day. However, your daily water intake really depends on the conditions. In the depths of summer, you may need eight glasses and more!
If I’m not thirsty, I’m not dehydrated, and I don’t need to be drinking more water: myth!
We all know that if you’re thirsty, you’re dehydrated. But is it possible to be dehydrated without being thirsty? Yes – that’s one of the little known drinking water facts! Our thirst receptors are a little bit delayed, and research has shown that they continue to delay as we age. That is one of the reasons that heatwaves can be so dangerous for older Australians. So keep up your fluids, whether you’re thirsty or not!
Drinking water isn’t enough to rehydrate me during strenuous exercise: myth
This one comes straight from the sports drink companies, and it is no more than a myth! The minerals and salts contained in sports drinks can be beneficial for rehydration. However, if you keep drinking water as your body needs it, you will be perfectly hydrated – that’s a drinking water fact! Drinking enough water and maintaining a balanced diet is usually all you need to stay in good condition – even when exercising.
Drinking coffee dehydrates me, so I need to be drinking more water: that’s a myth.
Coffee is a mild diuretic, which means it will cause you to lose some fluids. But you have to remember that coffee also contains a lot of water. So the water you lose will generally not match the water you gain. However, that doesn’t make coffee a great hydrator – we still recommend drinking water over coffee!
Drinking water is the only source of my fluid intake for the day: fact or myth?
Another one of the commonly misconceived drinking water facts is that drinking is the only means of fluid intake. That’s actually a myth. Although drinking water is the most important source of fluids for your body, our food also helps hydrate us. Fruit and vegetables have high water content, and they contribute to our hydration as well.

This is one of the worst drinking water facts we have seen! Drinking water between meals is not bad for you at all – in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Drinking water between meals helps hydrate you, and it helps the body’s digestion process.
Is it really possible to drink too much water? Technically, yes, but it’s highly unlikely!
This is one of those drinking water facts that’s met with disbelief. Is it really possible to become intoxicated on water? Well, yes, but not in the same way as alcohol. Water intoxication is extremely unlikely, and it occurs when there is so much water in the body that the kidneys can’t process it. To reach that point, you would need to consume gallons of water, which is nearly impossible.
