The ancient Romans were among the first to bring water to the masses

To start this journey through the history of the world’s most precious commodity, let’s look at ancient Rome. Rome one of the most industrious civilisations of the ancient period, and they were set on one thing: expansion. The Roman Empire travelled across the globe seeking to expand. But without drinking water, that was an impossibility. So how did the Romans service their many settlements? With remarkably advanced aqueducts! Almost two thousand years after the fall of the Romans, another development came in the history of water. And like with the Romans, it was born of necessity. With the industrial revolution in full swing, London was overcrowded. The largest problem to arise from this was waste management: sewage was contaminating almost every water source imaginable. It got so bad in June 1858 that Parliament refused to sit owing to the stench of the River Thames. Their solution: pass legislation to demand a certain standard of water quality. This meant that previous methods of water storage and plumbing were regulated. As a part of that, water was filtered and rudimentarily purified.

Shortly after, the history of drinking water was altered by pre-filtration

One form of basic purification is pre-filtration. Today, pre-filtration is remarkably effective, and we owe that to the history of drinking water – especially in industrial London. Pre-filtration today uses a combination of physical and chemical processes to remove impurities from water. It’s normally the first stage of water filtration, and it is used almost universally to create clean and pure drinking water.
